What happens in a cleaning & exam appointment
- Welcome & comfort. Step-free entry, accessible parking. Soft music, warm light, room to breathe.
- Digital X-rays when due (low-dose, ~80% less radiation than film).
- Hygienist cleaning — ultrasonic and hand instruments remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line, followed by polishing.
- Periodontal check. Probing depths and bleeding points recorded to monitor gum health over time.
- Oral cancer screening. Quick visual + tactile screening — the single most important early-detection tool.
- Exam with Dr. Desai. Tooth-by-tooth review, oral health discussion, photos when something needs explaining.
- Honest plan. If anything needs attention, you leave with a written, itemized plan and a real conversation about pacing. If nothing needs attention, we say so and see you in six months.
How often should I have my teeth cleaned?
Most adults benefit from professional cleanings twice a year. Patients with periodontal disease, high cavity risk, diabetes, or certain medications may need more frequent visits. Your hygienist will recommend the right cadence for you at your first visit.
What if it’s been a long time since my last cleaning?
You’re not alone. Many of our new patients haven’t been to a dentist in 5–10 years. We approach it without judgment, with care, and with the understanding that getting back into a regular care routine is the point. The first visit may take a touch longer if there’s tartar buildup, but the goal is to make it as comfortable as possible.
Cleanings & insurance
Most PPO dental plans cover two preventive cleanings per year at 100%. Our front office will pre-verify your specific benefits before your visit so you know exactly what’s covered.
