What Invisalign is good at, and what it isn't
Invisalign uses a sequence of custom-fabricated clear plastic aligners that move teeth in small increments — usually 0.25 millimeters per tray, exchanged every 1-2 weeks. The system is excellent at tipping, derotation up to about 30 degrees, intrusion of small distances, and arch expansion. Most adult cases — mild crowding, spacing, mild relapse from earlier orthodontics — finish well in 6 to 18 months.
Invisalign is less effective at major intrusion or extrusion (moving teeth deeper into or out of the bone vertically), at significant molar rotation, at closing extraction spaces in complex cases, and at managing patients with skeletal discrepancies that require coordinated growth modification.
What traditional braces are still better at
Severe crowding where teeth need to move large distances. Complex movements requiring precise multi-axis control. Growing adolescents where cooperation with removable aligners cannot be guaranteed (Invisalign requires 20-22 hours per day of wear — if that’s not realistic, fixed appliances are safer). Specific bite corrections that benefit from auxiliary appliances like temporary anchorage devices, elastics, or palatal expanders.
Why Dublin adults overwhelmingly choose Invisalign
The reasons are practical. Most adult cases are in the moderate range that Invisalign handles well. Adults often work in professional environments where visible brackets are awkward. Adults are reliable about wearing aligners 20-22 hours per day. Aligners are removable for eating, which matters for dual-income households where dining is part of work or social life. Cleaning teeth without braces means lower decalcification and gingivitis risk during treatment.
The result, in our Dublin practice, is that 90%+ of adult orthodontic cases are well-served by Invisalign. The remaining 10% are usually referred to a specialist orthodontist for cases that benefit from fixed appliances.
The dentist-supervised vs. mail-order distinction
This is the single most important decision in modern orthodontics. Dentist-supervised Invisalign — where a trained clinician examines you, takes records, evaluates your bite and gums, plans the case in person, and monitors progress every 6-10 weeks — produces vastly better outcomes than mail-order aligners. Mail-order companies skip the clinical examination, can move teeth into positions that damage gums or roots, and offer no recourse when something goes wrong. We see the aftermath of mail-order cases in our office every year. The savings are not worth the risk.

An initial consultation with an iTero digital scan and outcome preview, so you see the projected result before committing. A series of custom aligner trays delivered over 6-18 months depending on case complexity. Check-in visits every 6-10 weeks. A final ‘refinement’ phase to fine-tune the result. Custom retainers, worn nightly, to preserve the alignment for life. Every case planned and priced individually with a written treatment plan.
Frequently asked
Is Invisalign as effective as braces for adults?
For mild to moderate cases — which describe most adult orthodontic needs — Invisalign is as effective as braces and finishes in similar timeframes. For severe crowding or complex movements, traditional braces or a referral to a specialist orthodontist may produce a better result.
How long does Invisalign take for adults?
Most adult Invisalign cases at Dublin Ranch Dental run 6 to 18 months. Simpler cases finish in 3 to 4 months.
How much does Invisalign cost in Dublin, California?
Every Invisalign case is planned and priced individually based on length and complexity. Dublin Ranch Dental discusses pricing openly during a complimentary consultation with a written treatment plan, with flexible financing through CareCredit, Sunbit, in-house monthly arrangements, and HSA/FSA.
Will Invisalign affect how I speak at work?
A slight lisp is common for the first few days as your tongue adapts to the aligners. Almost everyone adapts within a week.
Why is dentist-supervised Invisalign better than mail-order aligners?
Dentist-supervised Invisalign includes a clinical examination, bite engineering, periodontal evaluation, and ongoing supervision. Mail-order aligners move teeth without these clinical safeguards and have caused gum recession, root resorption, and bite collapse in cases we have seen. Dentist-supervised Invisalign is meaningfully safer.
