What determines veneer lifespan
Bite engineering. If the veneer is placed on a tooth that has a poorly distributed bite force, it will eventually fail. This is the single most important variable.
Lab quality. Master-ceramist labs produce porcelain that resists chipping and stain longer than stock-mill veneers.
Patient habits. Nighttime grinding, ice chewing, and using teeth as tools all shorten lifespan.
How to extend your veneers’ lifespan
Wear the night guard you were prescribed (if one was). Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste. Floss daily. Avoid biting hard objects (ice, nails, pen caps). See your dentist twice a year for cleanings and bite checks. Address grinding early.
What happens when a veneer needs replacing
Sometimes a single veneer needs replacement (a chip, a margin failure, an underlying decay issue). Sometimes a whole case needs refreshing after 15+ years. Both are routine. The cost of replacement is similar to the original placement and a good warranty (we offer one) covers many scenarios.
Frequently asked
Do porcelain veneers really last 20 years?
Yes — well-planned porcelain veneers placed by an experienced cosmetic dentist routinely last 15 to 20 years or longer. The variables that drive longevity are bite engineering, lab quality, and patient habits like grinding and nail biting.
Can a veneer be replaced if it chips?
Yes. A single chipped or failing veneer can be replaced individually without redoing the whole case. The replacement process is similar to the original placement.
What's the warranty on veneers at Dublin Ranch Dental?
Dublin Ranch Dental backs cosmetic work with a written warranty. Specific terms vary by case and are documented in your treatment plan.
Do veneers stain over time?
High-quality porcelain veneers are highly resistant to staining and typically maintain their color far better than natural enamel. Strong tea, coffee, and red wine can still cause edge staining over many years.
Should I get whitening before or after veneers?
Whitening before. Your dentist will color-match the veneers to your final tooth shade. Veneers themselves cannot be whitened the way natural teeth can.
