Why root canals have a bad reputation (and why it’s outdated)
The painful root canals your parents talked about were performed in an era before modern anesthetic, before fine rotary instruments, and before high-magnification optics. Today, the actual procedure is comparable in comfort to placing a routine filling. Patients are numb. They breathe normally. Many fall asleep mid-procedure.
What actually happens in your appointment
You arrive. We take a current X-ray. Dr. Desai gently numbs the area with local anesthetic — this is the only injection you’ll feel. He places a small protective barrier around the tooth, makes a tiny opening on the top of the tooth, removes the infected pulp tissue, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals the inside. The whole appointment runs 60–90 minutes.
What you’ll feel afterward
For the first 24–48 hours: a dull soreness when biting on the tooth, similar to a bruise. Over-the-counter ibuprofen handles this for almost everyone. By day 3 the soreness fades. Within a week the tooth feels normal.
Can I drive myself home?
Yes — absolutely. Root canals are done under local anesthetic only. No sedation, no grogginess, no need to arrange a ride. You drive in, get treated, and drive yourself home as if you’d come in for a cleaning.
Frequently asked
Is a root canal really painful?
No. Modern root canals are performed under local anesthetic and most patients describe the procedure as comparable in comfort to a routine filling. The pain associated with root canals is almost always the infection that preceded the procedure, not the treatment itself.
How long does it take to recover from a root canal?
Most patients feel some mild soreness when biting on the treated tooth for 24 to 48 hours, easing significantly by day 3. Full normal feeling typically returns within a week. Over-the-counter ibuprofen handles discomfort for almost everyone.
Can I drive home after a root canal at Dublin Ranch Dental?
Yes. Root canals at Dublin Ranch Dental are performed under local anesthetic only. There's no sedation and no grogginess — you can drive yourself home just as you would after a cleaning.
What's the alternative if I don't get a root canal?
If a tooth has an infected nerve, the realistic alternatives are root canal therapy or extraction. Extracting the tooth then typically requires an implant, bridge, or partial denture to replace it — which costs more and takes longer than the root canal.
How long will a root-canal tooth last?
Decades. A well-performed root canal followed by a properly designed crown has a long-term survival rate above 90%. Dublin Ranch Dental backs restorative work with a written warranty.
